Councillor Rags Sandhu has been appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), a recognition of his ongoing commitment to public service, entrepreneurship, and community leadership in Bexleyheath Ward and the London Borough of Bexley. The RSA, founded in 1754, is a global network of over 30,000 change-makers.

What Is the Royal Society of Arts Fellowship?

The RSA was founded in 1754 with a mission to enrich society through ideas and action. Over more than 270 years, it has grown into a global network of Fellows who are recognised for their contributions to society, business, and culture. Fellows are selected based on three core qualities: a commitment to creativity, courage, and collaboration; meaningful contributions to their field; and a desire to share knowledge for the common good.

Being appointed a Fellow of the RSA is both a personal honour and a recognition of the work I have done across public service, business, and civic life in the London Borough of Bexley. It reflects years of effort — as a councillor, as a former Deputy Mayor, and as someone who has worked to support and strengthen our community.

You can read more about my background and journey on the about page.

Why Was Councillor Rags Sandhu Appointed as an RSA Fellow?

The fellowship recognises a body of work spanning several areas:

  • Supporting local businesses — I have championed Bexleyheath's high street and small business community, working to connect entrepreneurs with resources, advice, and council support. Bexleyheath town centre is home to over 200 independent businesses, and I have advocated consistently for their interests.
  • Serving as Councillor and Deputy Mayor — Since being elected in 2022, I have represented Bexleyheath Ward on the council and served as Deputy Mayor of the London Borough of Bexley during the 2022/23 civic year, attending more than 80 official engagements.
  • Championing civic and charitable initiatives — From food bank support to the Dartford Lions Club, I have been involved in charitable work that has contributed thousands of pounds and hundreds of volunteer hours to the local community.
  • Building bridges for an inclusive community — I am committed to ensuring every resident feels represented and valued, regardless of background.

These efforts align closely with my core priorities as your councillor.

How Will the RSA Fellowship Benefit Bexleyheath and Bexley?

This appointment is not just a personal milestone — it is an opportunity to bring tangible benefits to the London Borough of Bexley. As an RSA Fellow, I plan to:

  • Bring new ideas to Bexley — The RSA produces world-leading research on education, the economy, and communities. I intend to draw on this work to inform local policy and community projects.
  • Use RSA networks to connect local voices with global conversations — The fellowship provides access to a network of over 30,000 Fellows across 90 countries. I want to use those connections to raise awareness of the challenges and successes in Bexleyheath Ward.
  • Develop projects for social, cultural, and economic progress — Working with residents, businesses, and community groups, I aim to launch at least 2 new collaborative initiatives within the next 12 months that draw on RSA frameworks and resources.

What Does This Mean for Residents of Bexleyheath Ward?

For residents, this fellowship means your councillor now has access to a wider set of tools, networks, and ideas to serve you better. It is a resource I intend to use — not a title to sit on a shelf.

I remain as committed as ever to the day-to-day work of representing Bexleyheath Ward: listening to your concerns, pushing for action on local issues, and working to make our community stronger. The RSA fellowship simply adds another dimension to that work.

If you have ideas about how we can use this opportunity to benefit our community, or if there is any local issue you would like to raise, please get in touch. I would welcome your thoughts.
