The 2024 Remembrance Service at Oaklands Road War Memorial in Bexleyheath drew hundreds of people to honour the fallen, featuring a parade of local veterans and youth groups, a two-minute silence at 11:00 AM, and wreath-laying by the Mayor of Bexley and other dignitaries from across the London Borough of Bexley.

What Happened at the 2024 Bexleyheath Remembrance Service?

The 2024 Remembrance Service at Oaklands Road War Memorial was one of the most poignant and well-attended in recent memory. Organised by the Bexleyheath and Welling branch of the Royal British Legion, the event brought together residents, veterans, serving personnel, and civic leaders in a shared act of remembrance.

The parade assembled before 10:30 AM, featuring local veterans, youth groups including Scouts and Cadets, and military reservists. Led by Reverend Trevor Wyatt, the service commenced at 10:40 AM. The congregation of Christ Church Bexleyheath joined the assembled crowd, filling the area around the memorial with hundreds of attendees.

At 11:00 AM, a two-minute silence fell across the gathering — a moment of profound stillness in the heart of Bexleyheath.

Who Attended the Remembrance Service?

The service was attended by a wide cross-section of the community. Among the dignitaries present were the Deputy Lieutenant of Bexley, Councillor Rags Sandhu, and other elected representatives from across the London Borough of Bexley. The Mayor of Bexley led the wreath-laying ceremony, with wreaths also placed by representatives of the armed forces, emergency services, and community organisations.

What made the occasion truly special was the number of ordinary residents who came to pay their respects. Families with young children stood alongside veterans in their 90s. It was a powerful reminder that remembrance belongs to everyone.

Why Does Remembrance Matter in Bexleyheath Ward?

Bexleyheath has a deep connection to military service. The Oaklands Road War Memorial records the names of local men and women who gave their lives in two world wars and subsequent conflicts. Each year, the Remembrance Service ensures that those sacrifices are neither forgotten nor taken for granted.

As Councillor Rags Sandhu, I consider supporting remembrance events one of the most important parts of my civic role. The Bexleyheath and Welling branch of the Royal British Legion does outstanding work throughout the year — from the annual Poppy Appeal, which raised thousands of pounds locally in 2024, to welfare support for veterans and their families.

The Royal British Legion has been supporting the armed forces community for over 100 years, and the Bexleyheath branch remains one of the most active in South East London.

How Can You Support Remembrance and Veterans in Bexley?

There are many ways residents of Bexleyheath Ward and the wider London Borough of Bexley can support the armed forces community beyond Remembrance Sunday:

  • Volunteer with the Royal British Legion — The Bexleyheath and Welling branch welcomes new volunteers for the Poppy Appeal and year-round activities.
  • Attend Safer Neighbourhood and community meetings — These forums often highlight local veterans' welfare issues. Visit the community page for upcoming events.
  • Support armed forces charities — Several Bexley-based charities provide direct support to veterans and serving families.

Remembrance is not a single day — it is a year-round commitment. If you would like to discuss how we can better support veterans and the armed forces community in Bexleyheath, please contact me. I am always ready to listen and act.
